Meet the 2010 BCIT Gtech Graduates

This section will grow to include all of the BCIT GTec graduates for 2010 - we are currently building this section of the site and hope you will return often as we add the graduate profiles.

My name is Sarah Jane Simplicio and I am graduating from the Graphic Communications of Technology program at BCIT in May, 2010. I became interested in this program because of the graphic design content. The program is not wholly focused on graphic design but expands on the subject enough for me to still keep my passion for designing. My interest in design has transitioned into an even greater passion for print, because print captures design and creativity so naturally. The education I received from BCIT helped me 100%; while at the same time it allowed me to learn more about myself and where I want to go from here.

My experience in graphic design has expanded from simple image manipulation on Photoshop to designing full length promotional event packages on Indesign. Also, I have enjoyed the great opportunity to become skilled in the photography spectrum; I have found a new interest – ‘photo-shopping’ has helped me develop amazingly creative work. Oddly, I don’t own a grand SLR but I do love the result of every photo. I’ve learned many techniques and color settings when capturing a photo. I have been able to assist with professional photographers at a small business in Surrey, as well as manage photo shoots.

I feel very grateful to the print industry for it has opened my eyes to many parts of the production process that I have not known before, or even considered. I’ve learned from the estimating aspect, to the prepress and press workflows, to the finishing stages of bindery. I do not have many years of experience in the industry yet, but I feel that the education and experiences that I have gained have equipped me with a sound foundation to work in the print industry. When it comes to technology and hands-on work, I am able to quickly learn, become familiar with new functions, and even teach new processes to others. I’m interested in working in the industry, and growing my knowledge and my skill set, for many years to come. My objective is to find employment in this industry in an area that allows me to use my creative skills and abilities. I enjoy working with team-mates and I also enjoy working on my own. I’ve done several projects that involved oral presentations and meetings with clients. I’ve been shown how to demonstrate to clients what they are being sold; and how to present my work that in a way that is beneficial to the clients and to the printer. Meeting new people and getting to know them is one of my strong points; this ability helps me to build professional and successful relationships. Sarah Jane Simplicio - sjsimplicio@gmail.com.
